Future Is Tomorrow: Fit to die (part 1)
19/11/09 || Smalley
The future may be tomorrow, but more average Italian metal is today; I mean, just what the hell is going on over there?! You guys can make food, art, architecture, funny, imitable accents, and women like nobody’s business, but metal? Uh uh! It’s fucken weird, a country so proficient in so many things being so deficient in metal, but a small place like Finland gives us so many good bands; I dunno, maybe Finns just naturally have that tr00 metalness running through their veins or something.
Anyway, Future Is Tomorrow is a power/prog-ish (emphasis on ish) outfit, and you could probably guess about the prog from the pretentious “part” part of their album title + the pointlessly extended, bracket-heavy song names. The actual songs here are kinda long, most of ‘em clocking in at around 6-8 minutes, meaning I had to spend more of my precious (okay, not really) time listening to what was otherwise middling power metal.
FiT’s singer kind of sounds like a whinier version of the guy from Kamelot, but I’ve heard worse in that regard, so he was a relatively minor problem for me. There’s also the very rare growl to be heard here and there, but it’s not enough to really change anything, or cut down on the blandless level. I did enjoy the band’s use of layered back-up choruses, and the overall energy level was nice, with good drumming and solos, but Future’s sound still lacked punch, with a weak, too-low-in-the-mix guitar serving as the main culprit.
Well, at least this one wasn’t as offensive to my ears as certain other records I’ve listened to for GD, and I thought about rewarding it with a 6.5 thusly, but then I thought, “Why reward playing it safe”? Though I didn’t dislike “Fit to die” at all, I didn’t like it at all either, so I had to dial down my final verdict in the end. At least if there’s one thing this band achieved, they added on another entry to the ever-growing list of average metal bands from Italy, so good job guys! I guess. Now, bring me the next label-sent so I can get back to the albums I actually care about.
